During the Christmas and holiday season, Kentucky is one of the most beautiful places in the country. Whether we’re under a foot of snow or in 70 degree weather, the scenery and rich history of the region shines brightly this time of year. Louisville has a variety of different events for festive outings. With attractions ranging from a family show to a theatre performance to an upscale dinner, there are festivities fit for everyone and every occasion.
Christmas at the Galt House
An annual tradition here in Louisville, KY, ‘Christmas at the Galt House’ is an excellent holiday tradition for families with younger children. Now on its sixth year, the Galt House features an indoor festival-style series of programming, including luminaries, a castle, snowflakes, ‘make your own snowman,’ an elf show, and letter writing to Santa. Tickets can be purchased online.
Now a highlight of the artistic scene in downtown Louisville, the Actors Theatre is offering their rendition of ‘A Christmas Carol’ this month until December 23. Sponsored by Fifth Third Bank, the production is based upon the timeless Charles Dickens classic. Tickets can be reserved through the Actors Theatre website.
Hosted by the Kentucky Center for the Arts, the annual Brown-Forman Nutcracker is a performance no Louisvillian should miss. The classic ballet performance has received much praise from the Courier-Journal, and the positive reviews indicate that this show is a timeless hit. Tickets can be reserved through the Kentucky Center for the Arts.
While Bardstown, KY is a trip away from Louisville, ‘My Old Kentucky Dinner Train’ is certainly worth the excursion. This year, the theme of the dinner and show is ‘Twas the Night Before Murder.’ Presented with the assistance of Bluegrass Mystery Theatre, the show features a narrative where Santa is pressured by an overly ambitious elf to abandon North Pole traditions. The ride is a 2 and a half hour excursion complete with a four course meal and non-alcoholic beverages. Pricing and ticket information can be found online.
One of the more unique holiday events to the Louisville area, ‘Lights Under Louisville’ is an annual light show that attracts audiences from across the state. Taking place in the historic Mega Caverns spanning under Watterson Expressway, this tunnel is large enough to fit cars, trucks, SUVs, and even school buses. The twist and turns of the caverns are filled with lights at every corner, and the displays become more impressive every year. Payment for admission is ‘per car.’ Details can be found on their website.
